NAL Publishes New Editions of Agricultural Thesaurus, Glossary

The USDA National Agricultural Library (NAL) has published 2008 editions of its NAL Agricultural Thesaurus (NALT) and Glossary of Agricultural Terms in both Spanish and English. The update is published collaboratively with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

NAL, the world’s foremost research library focused on agriculture, is part of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s chief scientific research agency.

The 2008 edition of the Agricultural Thesaurus and Glossary adds about 70 new definitions in Spanish and English, with expanded terminology associated with fuels, chocolate manufacture, bodies of water, the U.S. National Forest System, and acronyms used in the taxonomic classification of viruses.

The Thesaurus and Glossary Web site features a new format presenting parallel English and Spanish language interfaces, enabling users to search and read all background materials in either language.

It also features a “Download Files” page enabling users to download the thesaurus and glossary files in an array of formats. A “Contact us” page is also included where users can propose terms to be added to the thesaurus and glossary.

People on the Move : Handbook of Selected Terms and Concepts

Migration has moved high on the international agenda; it is now the focus of sensitive debates and growing media attention in a variety of contexts. Intense interest is shown in specific issues which have only emerged fully in recent years: the situation of internally displaced persons, the dynamics of a `migration-development nexus’, or the consequences of environmental change on human displacement. Meanwhile, the future of international refugee protection and standards of national asylum policies appears fragile and uncertain. An extensive terminology has evolved to cover standing and emerging issues as they also relate to the larger fields of human rights and development.

This handbook takes stock of the present use of some selected terms and concepts. It is designed to be accessible to a general public which may not be familiar with the detailed discussions in the field of refugee and migration policy.

The Astronomical Almanac — Glossary

The glossary contains concise definitions of many of the important astronomical terms necessary to understand and make use of the data presented in The Astronomical Almanac. Its contents remain the same from year to year, but occasionally terms are added or dropped. The version presently available is consistent with the 2009 edition of The Astronomical Almanac.
