Experiences of working life for Highland pupils

Image of a teenage girlHighland Council is supporting young people to gain experience of the working world through two key initiatives:

Skills for Work – these new vocational courses are being delivered by colleges, but also by an increasing number of schools working in partnership with local businesses. Skills for Work courses are available in a range of subjects, for example: Construction, Early Years Care, Rural Skills, and Financial Services. More information is available on the SQA website.

Work Experience – in addition to a one week placement at the age of 14, some pupils are now undertaking work experience for extended periods, several days a week, as part of preparation for leaving school.

For both these initiatives, there is a need for schools and young people to engage with local employers. Highland Council would very much welcome working with voluntary organisations in this way, so that young people can become aware of, and begin to experience, jobs in this sector.

To find out more, and to learn how you can support either of these initiatives, please contact Moira Forsyth, Business Development Officer, Highland Council, for an initial discussion.  Call 01349 868202 or email moira.forsyth@highland.gov.uk
