Sankofa Sunsplash was a celebration of African and African Caribbean culture – arts, dance, music, food, and performance taking place in Hull’s Queens Gardens
The name of the festival itself is a fusion of Africa and African Caribbean culture and heritage. The word ‘Sankofa’ has its roots in West African Adinkra symbolism. Sankofa signifies the importance of learning from the past. ‘Sunsplash’ refers to arguably the world’s most famous reggae festival – the Reggae Sunsplash, whose roots can be traced back to Northern Jamaica in the 1970s.
