Through graphics and text, the Eurostat regional yearbook 2008 paints a statistical portrait of life in the regions of the European Union's member states, candidate countries and the EFTA countries. Its 13 chapters are written by specialists and presented in a language accessible to all.
The book gives an ideal opportunity to assess the progress made so far in regional policy programmes recently launched as part of the EU's new cohesion policy. The latest results from the Urban Audit provide a snapshot of city life across the regions.
International Women's Day 2008 — Drawing competition: "Once upon a time there was a girl and a boy, without the two of them, the world would no longer be..."
26/11/2008
Look at children's drawings — but at the same time, learn about women's rights around the World. Children from countries outside the European Union have drawn pictures showing the role of women in society. The jury was composed entirely of children of the same age as those who took part in the competition, from all 27 European Union member states.
Women have the ability to do whatever men can do — if not even better than men. All the drawings chosen by the children always include a man and a woman together: going to school together, studying together, building something together, looking after their family together, working in the fields together for the same wage, bearing the weight of the world together.
Men and women are equal; they should have the same rights and the same opportunities wherever they are. Unfortunately, women often have fewer opportunities, they are less educated and their rights are often violated. This educating art book gives the reader a picture of the issue.
